Queology has its roots in barbecue competition. It all started when founders Russ Cornette and Matt Gamble attended a barbecue competition 11 years ago. After sampling the ‘cue from a number of the winning teams, the pair had a sauce-laden epiphany. They looked at each and said, “We can beat this.” So they set out to prove it.
They started entering Whole Hog competitions in 2001, and they started winning … and winning … and winning against the best teams in the South. In fact, they placed first in Pork and first overall in their inaugural competition.
In 2012 they finished first runner up in the Southern BBQ Network Team of the Year competition, and they placed first in the Pork category in the local Sam’s Club National BBQ Tour (they went on to secure an elite 12th-place overall finish in Sam’s regional competition in Tennessee).
The team started out of the gates with a rush this season by winning the Barbecue State Championship at the Smokin’ at The Farmer’s Market Commissioners Cup in Columbia, making them Grand Champion and qualifying them to compete at the prestigious World Food Championships in Las Vegas this fall.
Now Russ and Matt have decided to take the experience they’ve gained from the hard-knocks world of the barbecue competition circuit and bring their top-notch barbecue to the people. The winners in this case are Charleston diners. When you belly up to a plate of ‘cue at Queology on the Market you benefit from Russ and Matt’s head-to-head competition with the best barbecue pitmasters from across the South. So when we say that Queology is bringing Charleston the best barbecue in South Carolina, we’re not just whistling Dixie, we have the hardware to prove it! Thanks to Russ and Matt for upping the competition when it comes to Charleston barbecue joints.
